Migrating From OBIEE 11g/12C to OAC
Oracle offers Oracle Cloud Classic which means Standard services and OAC autonomous services which are managed by Oracle itself.
Oracle Cloud Classic or Standard:
These services are standard cloud services before autonomous services offered by Oracle supposed to manage by customer. Upgrades, Patching, Backups, Size, Monitoring and High Availability are managed by Customer.
OAC Autonomous:
Oracle extends Autonomous capabilities by making all platform services as
Self-Driving, Self-Securing and Self-Repairing. This gives enabling
Organizations to lower costs, reduce risk , accelerate innovation and get
predictive insights. Upgrades, Patching, Backup, Size, Monitoring and High
Availability are managed by Oracle itself.
Objective: To migrate OBIEE11g/12c to Oracle Analytics cloud
Prerequisite:
If
your OBIEE version is below 11.1.1.7, it must be upgrade to 11.1.1.7 then it is
able to migrate to OAC environment Migrating Metadata from OBIEE 11g to OAC is two-step process.
Step1:
Create an export bundle from OBIEE 11g (11.1.1.7 or later) using the BI Migration
Tool (migration-tool.jar). It
will capture the RPD, Web Catalog, and Users and Applications Roles from the
11g implementation. This utility can
download from your OAC environment copy it in your OBIEE 11g environment location.
Step2:
We need to import the created export bundle in to the OAC system. The BI Migration Script is used to generate the BI Migration tool jar file. This jar file need to be upload in your OAC environment in manage snapshot location. After importing this file into OAC, it will deploy those objects into OAC from OIBEE 11g.
Paths:
We used below paths for exporting jar file from OBIEE11g environment.
Note : Here C:\OBIEE11g\ is Oracle Middleware Home
Utility path -- C:\Rahiman\Migration-tool.jar
Top Level Installed OBIEE
Directory --
C:\OBIEE11g\Oracle_BI1
Domain Directory -- C:\OBIEE11g\user_projects\domains\bifoundation_domain
Destination Directory -- C:\Rahiman\Export.jar
Using migration-tool.jar utility we will export the jar file from existing OBIEE11g. Below screenshots are for reference to run commands.
(Note: These commands need to run in OBIEE11g server)
After executing above command, if
it is completed without any error. We will get output as given below saying
“Export complete”
“Migration action succeeded” in
your respective provided locations.
Note: Assuming that you already aware
of analytics URL and navigations.
In this OBIEE11g, below are the subject
area’s shown for reference to check after migrating from OBIEE 11g to OAC.
After that login to DV in OAC
environment. The homepage look like as given below.
Click on Console option, it will take to console page.
In console page, click on Service Administration option. This will take you to the services which is given in below screenshot.
Click on Manage Snapshots option, it will navigate to the
below page
In this snapshots section, go to the right side corner lines.
Navigate to Migrate-> Upload and restore BI EE 11g
Migration bundle.
Click on “Proceed without a virus scanner” or you can select
configure virus scanner then you can upload after configuring virus scanner.
Browse the exported bundle jar file by clicking on select
option in the above screenshot and provide the RPD password (OBIEE11g RPD
password).
Click on Upload and Restore button.
It will take some time for uploading file.
After uploading RPD file, it has been migrated to OAC
environment. In order to verify that,
Go to the analytics page in OAC then select NEW and check the
Subject Areas. Below is the screenshot for reference from OACS.
Migrating OBIEE 12C to OAC:
From OBIEE 12c to OAC migration is simple than 11g to OAC,
Just create a snapshot and upload the snapshot in OAC. Below is the process of
migration.
Summary:
Moving your OBIEE 11g to OAC will give you below benefits and
etc...
- Easy to maintain
- Extra features will be enabled
for visualization to your business
- Easily upgradable for new
versions in OAC
Challenges:
- Clean your RPD and web Catalog
before you export to OAC. Delete objects which are not used in current
environment. Ensure that your Initialization blocks are pointing to right
databases and remove IB those are not in use
- Make sure that your subject areas, analyses,
and dashboards are available as expected.
- Establish connections as per your standard
environment
- Create necessary roles and users as per
required
Note:
Once we upload snapshot, one can use OACS Admin tool to open Repository in cloud and perform changes as they wish and publish to cloud. For bulk meta data updates, one can download RPD and do changes and then publish to cloud from Admin Tool or Use Replace Data Model from console.
